I have used office 16, it quite well, I also face lot of trouble while installing 2016 on my portable and gave me an error that it couldn't find the servers. Please do the following steps:
Step 1. Run command prompt as administrator.
Step 2. Copy and run the command:

cd /d %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office16&cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:kms8.msguides.com&cscript ospp.vbs /act

Then check activation status again.

I have come to find out that the network I was on was blocking the activation. Your first solution did work.

Run the cmd to activate office and it say Product successfully Activated, but once I open MS Word or any office application, still asking for activation. I already use the procedure to my eldest son's laptop and everything is fine.
